Borneo Bengkel presents a thematic art exhibition showcasing pyrography and woodcut art and a series of four workshops.
Borneo Bengkel is a creative platform that explores issues of Bornean identity and culture through the eyes of craft makers, musicians, social activists, academicians and performers. The brainchild of Catama Borneo and HAUS KCH, it began life in 2017 as an arts residency programme and has now grown to have over 40 collaborators from around Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan.
This time, Borneo Bengkel presents People of the Land, a thematic exhibition featuring selected artworks from Pangrok Sulap collective, Sonia Luhong, Rico Leong and Catriona Maddocks. The exhibition includes wood cut prints, a papercut installation and pyrography (woodburning) artworks, and explores a myriad of themes including folklore and fables, endangered flora and fauna and disappearing cultural practices. People of the Land questions how our indigenous narratives define people and place, and weave together landscape, spirituality, heritage and identity.
The exhibition will run from 11am to 10pm on 7-8 July at Borneo744, and is free to enter.
Borneo Bengkel artists will also host a series of workshops, held hourly from 11am - 6pm. Prices vary from RM10 - RM50 and are suitable for all age ranges and abilities.
